I don’t think we have ever seen anything like this from a US studio. The visuals here are mindbendingly awesome fantasy/sci-fi/steampunk craziness with no frame of reference for an audience to filter through. This may not sound like a big deal, but trust me that this kind of thing makes studio execs stay awake at night. “There’ s a metformin hydrochloride 500 mg dragon in it? Okay, cool, it’s fantasy like Lord of The Rings… What? There’s robots in it too?? But… That’s impossible! The public will be confused! I know we told Zack Snyder he could do whatever he wanted, but… I’m fired, aren’t I?”
I think this looks like it could be amazing. However, there is huge room for error here. The visuals will be astounding but whether or not they are tied together with a great story that actually grounds all the pyrotechnics remains to be seen. I can’t think of another movie to even compare this to. Probably the closest was the Japanese film Casshern which had a similar amazing, colorful trailer but the final film on that was a confusing mess.
