TRON’s Kosinski Pitches Oblivion

TRON: Legacy isn’ t even metformin 1000 mg dosage in the can, and director Joseph Kosinski is already trying to get another project off the ground by making the rounds at Comic-Con, starting with pitching the idea to Disney. Oblivion is a post-apocalyptic graphic novel, which hits shelves in November.

Radical Publishing describes the project as such:

Plotted by Kosinski and scripted by Arvid Nelson (“Rex Mundi”), “Oblivion” takes place in an apocalyptic future where the Earth’s surface has become dangerous and inhospitable, and people live above the clouds, returning to the planet only to scavenge supplies and relics from a bygone era. However, when one such explorer comes across a beautiful woman in a crash-landed craft, an epic adventure begins that will change the way he looks at his world forever.

We know that Kosinski’s next will be Archangel, with a remake of Black Hole to follow at some point, so naturally, much isn’t known about Oblivion, but the premise sounds intriguing. I get a Dune-vibe from the art, which is a good thing, but with people supposedly living in the clouds (bringing to mind Bespin from The Empire Strikes Back), I can’t help but be afraid that we’re going to be traveling back into derivative-scifi territory. Admittedly, it’s far, far, far too early to make any snap judgments regarding the subject matter, but I can’t help but list my initial concern. With that said, I’m a huge fan of dystopian futures and life after the apocalypse theories, and with TRON shaping up to be “the next big thing” when it hits screens in December, Oblivion is definitely a project that everyone should be excited about. And honestly, I’m just digging this resurgence in potentially great scifi.

Thanks to Deadline for the scoop and pic.

As much as we've had an over saturation of post-apocalyptic films in the past year, color me intrigued.
