Day 10: The Serpent metformin weight loss reviews and The Rainbow (1988)
“When you wake up scream, Doctor Allen. Scream all you want. There is no escape from the grave.”
The Serpent and The Rainbow is a rare case of a horror movie being based on a non-fiction book by an anthropologist. So imagine the ramifications of that as you watch this film about Voodoo magic being used to bring the dead back to life.
It stars Bill Pullman as a Harvard researcher who travels to Haiti to procure a secret voodoo powder that places people into a state of simulated death. His investigation into the hidden world of black magic grows increasingly dangerous until he’s caught in a living nightmare. Basically, he has a long, tripped out vision of all sorts of crazy, horrific events happening to him that culminate in him waking up after being buried alive. What!? They say experience is the best teacher so Pullman knows the only way he can get to the bottom of his case is to subject himself to the voodoo medicine he’s trying to discover.
What I like about this film is how strong a sense of atmosphere is created by director Wes Craven (long before he brought horror back to the mainstream with Scream). We’ve seen tons of ghost stories and exorcism movies, but the world of voodoo magic remains largely untouched. Haiti is a perfect location as it’s one of a few locales that still seem exotic and unknown to American audiences. Check this movie out for something a little different. And cancel the trip to Haiti, you won’t want to go there anymore.
