Zemeckis to Direct Wizard of Oz Remake?

Original ideas metformin er 500mg weight loss are great, but what we really need is yet another modern Wizard of Oz movie. That is what we all want, right? Well just in case the other two ‘Oz’ films in development are not enough to whet your appetite, Robert Zemeckis may soon helm a live-action remake of the 1939 film. If this comes to fruition, of the three projects it will be the only direct remake and not a sequel or prequel.

Three-year-old me would be thrilled right now. The Wizard of Oz was my first ever favorite film and I watched it nearly every day. I also somehow added a ‘B’ to the name, so for little Connor it was always “The Wizard of Boz” (don’t ask me why). Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has approached Zemeckis to direct in what would be his return to live cinema after an extended stint in the animated realm. Since 2004 Zemeckis has dabbled exclusively with computer animation and motion capture, bringing us The Polar Express, Beowulf, A Christmas Carol, and the upcoming Yellow Submarine.

This comes along after Dorothy of Oz, an animated sequel with voice work from Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi, Patrick Stewart, Kelsey Grammar, and Glee’s Lea Michelle among others, targeted for an April 2012 release. The third ‘Oz’ project being talked about is Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, with Sam Raimi potentially directing and Robert Downey Jr. starring as the Wizard when he first arrives in the land of Oz.

No matter what happens with any of these three, it won’t be much of a stretch for them to surpass the legacy of the most recent ‘Oz’ adaptation – Sci-Fi’s mini-series, Tinman, starring the incomparable Neal McDonough.

Update: It looks like Zemeckis has passed on the project. EW reports that the director only engaged in preliminary talks with the studio. The remake is still under consideration, but if it goes ahead it will be directed by someone else.
