Just as Deadline predicted, the Academy is pursuing a sequel to last year’s double-date, when Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin co-hosted the ceremony with performances that could best be described as “wooden.” This time around, Oscar is shaving off a few decades and going with a younger generation of “Hollywood icons.”
James Franco, almost a guaranteed Oscar contender with his performance in 127 Hours, will be hosting with Anne Hathaway. Hathaway helped Hugh Jackman with song-and-dance duties a couple years back. For Hathaway, the gig is particularly convenient; With the recent release of Love and Other Drugs, Hathaway won’t have to worry about actually receiving an Oscar any time soon. Well, at least not for another year.
Here’s what Oscar telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer have to say about the young stars:
“James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons— fresh, exciting and multi-talented. We hope to create an Oscar broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world on February 27,” said Cohen and Mischer. “We are completely thrilled that James and Anne will be joining forces with our brilliant creative team to do just that.”
