Comfort Food: The Very Thought of You

Old friends metformin hcl 500 mg dosage hanging out.

The Very Thought of You (1998) (or, its original British and less generic title, Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence) is a brief, endearing romantic-comedy. Most of its charm stems from how much I love all its leads: Tom “humorously short” Hollander, Rufus “never the winner unless you count Fortinbras” Sewell, Joseph “sexiest man of the late 90s” Fiennes, and Monica “blonde Manic Pixie Dream Girl” Potter. The film explores the bonds of childhood friendship when faced with a woman. Laurence (Fiennes) early one morning wakes up his psychiatrist neighbor and tells him all about how he and his friends all have experiences with an American woman (Potter) who decides to move to London because she’s so fed up with her life in Minneapolis.

Although really, what are either of them wearing?

The neighbor first hears about Martha meeting Daniel (Hollander), a successful music label executive who wears awful colored suits that were kind of okay during the ’60s fashion revival of the ’90s, at the airport before flying to London. Daniel is instantly smitten and secretly upgrades Martha to first-class. Martha is appropriately creeped out and gets away from him as fast as she can once they’re in England, but not before Daniel can offer to put her up in a fancy hotel.

Frank is also a proto-Geoffrey Tennant.

Daniel doesn’t hear from Martha directly, just that she ordered an expensive dinner for two the night before. Heartbroken, he tells Frank (Sewell) and Laurence about her. Failed actor Frank then encounters Martha drinking in a park, and–instantly knowing who she is and being in perpetual competition with Daniel–decides to woo her. Frank’s amusingly gross and a little too pathetic to abandon, so Martha hangs out with him for the rest of the afternoon until she leaves him at an art gallery. Frank is flabbergasted at this result since she was clearly “eating out his hand.”

In which they literally run into each other at the airport.

Then, Laurence starts back at the beginning of the story, telling his perspective. Turns out, he and Martha met in at the airport and spent a perfect evening together, up until Daniel sends flowers to the hotel room that he set her up with. Laurence, ever the push-over, is hesitant to start a relationship with a woman that one of  his best friends are interested in, no matter how sick of them he is, so he runs away. But he still really likes Martha, and Martha still really likes him. And then his other best friend spends the afternoon with her. WILL THEY MAKE IT? Of course they do. And of course it ends on an airplane. All I can say is, at least it makes sense in this film.

Joseph Fiennes's Look of Love™

So yeah, the The Very Thought of You is a little high concept, with the 3 storylines and the talking to the neighbor framing device, but its ultimately more about two really cute people meeting and liking each other. Laurence and Martha’s trip from the airport to the fancy hotel in London is sprinkled with the appropriately awkward conversation of new acquaintances who are attracted to each other, and it fills me with more joy than is probably healthy. No declarations of love are made, just actions that show that they want to spend some time together. And at an hour and a half, you can slide in this this piece of adorable rom-com heaven in the middle of a day you need to believe in a future where you run into someone decent and attractive. May they turn out to be Joseph Fiennes or Monica Potter.
