7 Movie Embarrassments

I’ ve disappeared metformin er 500mg side effects for awhile as grad school has slowly sucked my soul until the only thing I could do was watch crappy movies found on Netflix Instant or On Demand. Not to say that no quality movies ever make an appearance on these entertainment venues, but my mental state has been shaky at best lately, and my poor judgment has led to some pretty poor decisions. So, as a cathartic release of the stress from the last few weeks, I’d like to air out some of the embarrassment that has entered my eyes and ears in the last few weeks.

Review: Jane Eyre

As a self- declared costume metformin side effects 500mg drama whore, it was my moral obligation to see this latest incarnation of Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel Jane Eyre. Since I have never seen a fully satisfactory feature-length version of this story, I had high hopes going into this movie, and my hopes were delightfully met.

Steve Buscemi is in this

Yes, I did know he was in Reservoir Dogs. Calm down.

We’ve all been there. We’re watching a movie or TV show that maybe we don’t know a whole lot about, and then Steve Buscemi comes onscreen. If you’re like me, it’s usually a moment filled with more joy than you could possibly explain in words so you just yell, “Steve Buscemi is IN THIS?” And then the people you’re watching whatever show with tell you to shut up.

RIP, the Credits Song

There was a time when credits songs from animated movies rocked the (adult contemporary) charts. Apparently nothing says L-O-V-E quite like a sexified cover of a drawn couple’s courtship. But there were also the songs that just brought the cheesy. Let’s reminisce together.

Comfort Food: The Very Thought of You

Old friends hanging out.

The Very Thought of You (1998) (or, its original British and less generic title, Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence) is a brief, endearing romantic-comedy. Most of its charm stems from how much I love all its leads: Tom “humorously short” Hollander, Rufus “never the winner unless you count Fortinbras” Sewell, Joseph “sexiest man of the late 90s” Fiennes, and Monica “blonde Manic Pixie Dream Girl” Potter. The film explores the bonds of childhood friendship when faced with a woman. Laurence (Fiennes) early one morning wakes up his psychiatrist neighbor and tells him all about how he and his friends all have experiences with an American woman (Potter) who decides to move to London because she’s so fed up with her life in Minneapolis.

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion

Donnie Darko (2001) is one of those quirky indie movies I heard about for years and never got around to, but I kept hearing about it because half of people who’ve seen it vehemently love it and the other half vehemently hate it. These are the kind of movies that I’m wary to see because there’s a big chance that I’ll end up really disliking them and offending friends (see: Garden State, American Beauty, anything by Kevin Smith). But every so often, I end up loving these odd little indie films (see: Brick, Smoke Signals). And, as far as my love of sci-fi weirdness and filmed therapy sessions go, I kind of ended up loving Donnie Darko, too.
