The Oscar for Best Picture has always been the most divisive. Sadly, no one outside of Hollywood really cares about who won the Oscar for Art Direction in 1993, but most everyone knows that Annie Hall won the Oscar in 1978. Why? Because it beat out Star Wars! Controversy will always surround the winners of the big prize, because we all want our favorite movie to win.
Music dictates tone, emotion, and flow in movies. A theme played at the right moment can cause chills or create tears. Or, like in Jaws, a cue can become the voice of a character, or a warning sign of the events to come. Music can dictate the pacing of the film, or contradict the visuals on screen to transform the scene into the ultimate example of irony. A film’s music, whether composed originally or compiled from various artists, is as inseparable as its characters.
Actors are what audiences most associate movies with. Sure, people remember bits of dialogue, how beautiful a scene looked, cues of the score, or how cool the special effects were, but none of that can compare with the power of the almighty actor. Hollywood publicity and tabloid absurdities aside, actors can make or break a movie.
Before I wanted to be a screenwriter, I was absolutely obsessed with the wizardry of special effects. For years, I wanted to work in that industry. A job working for Industrial Light & Magic was my dream until someone told me that I was a good writer, and my interests shifted to screenplays and directors’ chairs.
If you follow the road to the Oscars then you know how important the editing category is. Editing is a thankless job that makes and breaks every film. The reason why it’s thankless is because the credit always goes to the director that steered the film to its destination, the actors that brought the characters to life, and the writer that created the world.
